About Lara Veleda Vesta
SACRED ART, MYTH and STORY
My name is Lara Veleda Vesta and I am an artist, writer, storyteller and educator living in Portland, Oregon.
My explorations include dís-ability, rites of passage, ancestral mythology, folklore and the sacred creative. I am the author and illustrator of The Moon Divas Guidebook: Spirited Self-Care for Women in Transition, the Moon Divas Oracle and Wild Soul Runes: Reawakening the Ancestral Feminine (forthcoming from Red Wheel/Weiser Books, 2021). I am also the creator/facilitator of many courses at the Wild Soul School, both self-study and live. I live with Myalgic Encephalomeylitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a disease caused by viruses and inflammation with an infectious trigger. Prior to my illness I was a university professor teaching classes in English and writing and a PhD student in Philosophy and Religion.
I am medically limited to a few hours of activity per day, less if I am symptomatic. The unpredictable nature of my illness has made traditional work impossible. To be empowered by chronic illness is to invest in the sacred creative, and trust. I share my studies, classes, creations and path as gifts and am supported in this offering by an incredible Patron community and the generous contributions of other donors. This model of community support enables me to work with the medical limits and myth cycles of my disability
My research interests include the use of non-religious ritual in community creation, the feminine in rune history, and empowered ancestor work. Currently, I am working on two book projects about illness as initiation and navigating death transitions.
I am also a mother of three nearly grown children in a blended family, love tending our urban permaculture gardens, making herbal medicines and spending time in the wild.
Wild Soul Runes:
Reawakening the Ancestral Feminine
Wild Soul Runes is a guided ritual practice to build relationship with all thirty-three runes. What began as a class at the Wild Soul School has become a book, forthcoming from Red Wheel/Weiser in May 2021. Order your copy here.
Using inquiry, original translations alongside the traditional rune poems and sacred art, Wild Soul Runes invites readers to develop their own wisdom connection with the runes through practice. This is an exploration for both seasoned rune practitioners and those new to the runes.
Wild Soul Runes introduces the reader to the history of the runes, both in myth and through the connection with Old European archaeological findings. This history offers evidence for the idea that the runes have a feminine origin, coming from the well of the Norns, the female triple giantesses who represent the fates in Norse myth. With sections on sacred art integration, wyrd divination and ancestral connection, Wild Soul Runes is a journey, shared.
